The Hardwood Guys installs hardwood floors in Westport, CT: solid and engineered, in single rooms, additions, renovations and whole houses. We have been serving Fairfield County and Westchester since 2001. Westport is a town of older homes, shoreline houses and large renovations, which means a lot of the work here is new flooring that has to fit into a house that already has history: wide planks in one room, a staircase that has to match, an addition whose floor has to meet the old one without a visible line.

Westport Homes and What Installation Looks Like Here

Housing in Westport ranges widely, and each type of house raises its own installation questions:

  • Compo Beach, Old Mill and Greens Farms. Shoreline homes, from older cottages to large renovated houses. Humidity off Long Island Sound moves wood more than it does inland, so board width and acclimation get extra attention, and engineered hardwood is often worth considering.
  • Saugatuck and downtown. A mix of older houses, townhouses and condominiums. Building rules, elevator access and the floor underneath all shape what can be installed and when.
  • Coleytown and north Westport. Larger homes on larger lots, many with additions. These jobs often mean long runs of flooring, stairs and the challenge of matching a new floor into an existing one.
  • Older homes anywhere in town. Original subfloors that have moved with the house, wide-plank rooms and earlier repairs. We inspect the subfloor before we promise a layout.

Coastal Humidity and Acclimation in Westport

Wood moves with the moisture in the air, and a house near the Sound sees it swing harder than most: damp summers, then dry heated winters. A floor installed before the wood has adjusted to your home will shrink or swell afterward, and that is where gaps, cupping and squeaks come from. Acclimation means leaving the flooring in the rooms where it will be installed, with the heating or cooling running at normal living conditions, until the readings on the wood and the room agree.

There is no standard number of days. The species, the board width and where the wood was stored all change it, so we go by readings rather than the calendar. Some seasonal movement is normal, and we explain what normal looks like so you can tell it from a moisture problem. Our blog explains how humidity swings affect hardwood in Connecticut and New York in more detail. If a leak is the cause, see water damaged hardwood floor repair.

Solid vs Engineered Hardwood for Westport Homes

  • Solid hardwood. Wood all the way through, usually nailed to a wood subfloor. It can be sanded and refinished several times, and it suits main living areas and stairs above grade. It moves more with humidity, so acclimation and board width matter.
  • Engineered hardwood. A real wood wear layer over a layered core that is more stable when humidity changes. It is often the better fit over a concrete slab, in a finished basement or in a home close to the water. The wear layer decides how many times it can be sanded, so we check it first.

Many Westport homes end up with both, and we match species and color between them so the change does not show. Our hardwood floor installation page covers subfloor prep, moisture testing and the full process.

How a Westport Installation Runs

  1. Free walk-through and estimate. We look at the rooms, the subfloor, the transitions and the stairs, and talk through solid or engineered.
  2. Choosing the wood. Species, width, grade and color, with samples, and stain on sample boards where you want a color.
  3. Subfloor prep and moisture testing. Old flooring comes up, the subfloor is repaired and flattened, and we take readings on the subfloor and the wood.
  4. Acclimation. The flooring sits in the house until the readings agree.
  5. Layout and installation. Nailed, stapled, glued or floated, depending on the product and the subfloor.
  6. Sanding and finishing, where the floor is finished in your home, with dust-contained sanding.
  7. Final walk-through. Care instructions and guidance on when to walk on the floor and move furniture back.

Stairs, Transitions and Matching Into Existing Floors

New flooring in an older house is rarely just open floor. We install treads, risers and nosings, and the thresholds and transitions where hardwood meets tile, carpet or another wood floor. When a new addition has to meet an existing floor, we match the species and the board width and can stain to match. If an older floor has darkened or faded, the best result is sometimes to refinish old and new together. See stairs and treads.

What Affects the Cost of Hardwood Installation in Westport

We give a written estimate after seeing the space. These are the main things that move it:

  • Square footage, room count and layout
  • The species, grade, width and thickness of the wood, and solid versus engineered
  • Prefinished boards, or a floor that is sanded and finished in your home
  • Subfloor repairs, leveling, a moisture barrier or removing old flooring
  • Installation method: nailed, glued or floated
  • Stairs and transitions
  • Access and scheduling rules in condominium buildings

Refinishing in Westport

We refinish existing hardwood floors in Westport as well. A full sand and new finish brings back worn oak, a screen and recoat refreshes a floor that is dull but sound, and we repair loose or damaged boards first. Our hardwood floor refinishing page explains the process and the finish options, and hardwood floor repairs covers squeaks, gaps and board replacement. For cupped or buckled boards after a leak, see water damaged hardwood floor repair.

Our Best-Known Westport Project

Westport Hardwood Installation FAQ

Should I choose solid or engineered hardwood for a Westport home?

It depends on the room. Solid hardwood suits main living areas and stairs over a wood subfloor and can be refinished several times. Engineered hardwood is steadier when humidity changes, so it is often the better choice over a concrete slab, in a finished basement or in a home near the water. We look at the room and the subfloor and tell you which we would pick.

Does living near the water change how you install hardwood?

It changes how much attention we pay to moisture. Homes near Long Island Sound see bigger seasonal humidity swings, so we test the subfloor, let the wood acclimate to readings rather than the calendar, and look closely at board width and at whether engineered hardwood is the steadier choice.

How long does the wood need to acclimate?

There is no single number of days. It depends on the species, the board width, where the wood was stored and how far your home's humidity is from the wood's. We go by moisture readings, with the heating or cooling running at normal living conditions.

Can you match new hardwood to the floor already in my house?

We match the species and board width, and we can stain to match. Older floors that have darkened or faded are harder to match exactly, so sometimes the best result is to refinish the old and new boards together. We tell you what is realistic before anything is ordered.

Do you install engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank and laminate too?

Yes. We install solid hardwood, engineered hardwood, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) and laminate. Tell us where the floor is going and how the room is used, and we will recommend one.

Do you also refinish and repair floors in Westport?

Yes. See hardwood floor refinishing and hardwood floor repairs, so installation, refinishing and repairs can be handled by one company.
