The Hardwood Guys refinishes hardwood floors in Darien, Connecticut (06820): Noroton, Noroton Heights, Tokeneke, Long Neck Point, Delafield Island, and the neighborhoods north of the Post Road up toward the New Canaan line. Darien sits on the Connecticut shoreline between Stamford and Norwalk in Fairfield County, well inside our 35-mile Stamford service area, so estimates and scheduling are straightforward. We’ve been refinishing floors across Fairfield County and Westchester since 2001. Most Darien jobs are refinishing original oak that has gone dull, gray or scratched. We also do screen-and-recoats, board repairs, stairs, and new hardwood where a kitchen or addition needs to match the rest of the house.

Darien Homes and the Floors We Find in Them

  • Older colonials and capes in the neighborhoods around downtown Darien and Noroton Heights. Usually narrow-strip red or white oak, often refinished before, sometimes hidden under carpet. The first thing we check is how much wear layer is left.
  • Shoreline homes in Tokeneke, Noroton, Long Neck Point and Delafield Island. Salt air and Long Island Sound humidity mean more seasonal movement. Floors can swell in summer and gap in winter, so we measure moisture before sanding and plan the finish around the season.
  • Larger, newer homes north of I-95. Long open runs, wide-plank white oak, and site-finished or prefinished floors. Keeping stain and sheen consistent across open rooms, landings and stairs is the main challenge.
  • Kitchens and additions where new boards have to be woven into an old floor, then sanded and finished so the seam disappears.

Refinish, Recoat or Repair?

  • Screen and recoat. The finish is tired but nothing has worn through to bare wood. Faster and less disruptive than a full sand. See hardwood floor cleaning and maintenance.
  • Full sand and refinish. Graying, wear through the finish, deep scratches, pet stains, or a new color.
  • Repair first. Loose, cracked, water-stained or cupped boards get fixed before sanding. See hardwood floor repairs.
  • Engineered floors. We check the wear layer first. Some can take a light sand; some should only be recoated.

How a Darien Refinishing Job Runs

  1. Free walk-through. Species, wear layer, moisture, repairs and rooms, followed by a written estimate.
  2. Prep. We contain the work area, cover vents and doorways, and protect cabinets and stairs.
  3. Dust-contained sanding, coarse to fine, plus edging and hand-scraping.
  4. Stain samples on your floor if you want color.
  5. Finish coats in the system you choose, with buffing between coats as needed.
  6. Walk-through and care plan, with dates for foot traffic, furniture and rugs.

Finish Options

Project times are from our finish-options chart. Exact timing depends on the size of the job, stain and coats.

  • Oil-modified polyurethane (Minwax colors): a warm amber tone and the traditional look on red oak. Project time 1–6 days.
  • Water-based polyurethane such as Bona Traffic HD (Duraseal or Minwax colors): clear, stays light, low odor. A good fit for white oak, bleached or natural floors and busy households. Project time 2–4 days; Bona Traffic HD has a 3-day cure before rugs and furniture go back.
  • Modern hard oils: a natural matte, low-sheen look with almost no off-gassing. Easy spot repair, but it needs periodic maintenance. Project time 2–4 days.

Color: Natural, Bleached or Stained

Many Darien homeowners want light, natural white oak or a bleached look. Others prefer a classic brown such as Jacobean or dark walnut. We sample on your floor and can reduce the red tones in red oak. See the hardwood refinishing and bleached oak page and our stain chart.

What Affects the Price

  • Square footage, and how many separate rooms, closets and hallways
  • Floor condition: deep scratches, pet damage, old wax, or a failed previous finish
  • Board repairs or weave-ins
  • Stain or natural, and the number of finish coats
  • The finish system you choose
  • Stairs, which are priced separately (see stairs and treads)

Darien Hardwood Refinishing FAQ

Do you serve all of Darien, CT?

Yes: Noroton, Noroton Heights, Tokeneke, the shoreline neighborhoods, downtown, and north Darien up to the New Canaan line. Darien is next to Stamford, inside our regular service area.

How long does refinishing take?

It depends on square footage, repairs, stain and the finish system. Our finish-options chart lists 1–6 days for oil-modified polyurethane and 2–4 days for water-based finishes and modern hard oils. You get a schedule with your estimate.

Our house is near the water. Does that change anything?

It can. Homes near Long Island Sound see bigger humidity swings, so we check moisture before sanding. We’ll also tell you if a different season or finish would work better for your floor.

Should we refinish or just recoat?

If wear hasn’t reached bare wood and there’s no graying or water staining, a screen-and-recoat is often enough. Otherwise we’ll recommend a full sand. We’ll show you what we see at the walk-through.

Can you match new boards in a kitchen or addition to our old floor?

Yes. We weave in matching species and width, then sand and finish everything together so the color and sheen match.

Do you refinish stairs too?

Yes: treads, risers and nosings, finished to match your floors. See stairs and treads.

Is there a warranty?

Yes, a one-year workmanship warranty on every job.
